Assurance: Twenty Tests for God's Children

There is so much uncertainty in our lives today, but for the believer in Jesus Christ, there are many things we can know for sure. One thing God wants us to know for sure is whether we will one day enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. John writes in 1 John 5:13, "These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God."

The word know that is used here does not mean “I really hope so.” Instead, it is a word that indicates this is an absolute assurance—you can know for sure that you have eternal life. You do not need to doubt. How can one know they have eternal life? By the valid tests John has given—by self-examination as Paul would say in 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified.”
